Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30 day suspension and a 255 euro fine by the Portuguese Football Federation following a disciplinary case over his departure from the national team’s training camp.

The decision was announced on Monday October 19 2026 by the federation’s Disciplinary Council after it upheld the charge against the 41 year old forward for intentionally violating its disciplinary regulations. The punishment followed an incident in which Ronaldo left Portugal’s camp in Copenhagen Denmark on September 30 ahead of an international fixture.

The dispute reportedly followed disagreements between Ronaldo and Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus over the forward’s role in the team. Ronaldo was left on the bench during Portugal’s match against Norway and was reportedly unhappy after warming up without being introduced.

Tensions increased before the team’s next match against Denmark. Ronaldo subsequently left the training camp, prompting the federation to open disciplinary proceedings and impose a provisional suspension while the case was being examined.

The federation’s disciplinary panel found Ronaldo guilty of the offence under Article 160 subsection 1 of its disciplinary regulations. It imposed a 30 day suspension and an additional fine of 255 euros.

Ronaldo later apologised for his conduct and acknowledged that leaving the national team’s camp had consequences. He also indicated his willingness to accept the punishment and remain available for future selection.

The disciplinary decision did not specify which matches or activities would be covered by the suspension or whether the period already served under the provisional suspension would count towards the final sanction.

However reports from Portuguese media indicate that the suspension period is expected to end before Portugal’s next international fixtures in November. Ronaldo could therefore be available for selection if he is recalled by the coaching staff.

Portugal Football Federation president Pedro Proenca has expressed a desire to see the captain return to the national team once the disciplinary matter has been resolved. Coach Jorge Jesus has also left open the possibility of Ronaldo’s return, although the circumstances surrounding their disagreement have attracted attention.

Ronaldo remains one of Portugal’s most prominent footballers and holds national records for international appearances and goals. His future involvement with the national team will depend on his availability, selection by the coach and the resolution of any remaining issues.

The case highlights the disciplinary responsibilities of players representing their national teams and the importance of following team procedures even when disagreements arise between players and coaching staff.
