Professor Gregory Ikechukwu Ibe, founder of Gregory University Uturu in Abia State and the All Progressives Grand Alliance governorship candidate in the 2023 Abia State election, has died at the age of 63.

His death was announced on Monday, October 19, 2026, in a statement issued by the royal family of HRH Eze Cyril Ibe, Okwelube I of Amaokwe Achara Autonomous Community in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State. According to the family, the professor died on Sunday, October 18, after battling health challenges.

The family described the late academic and entrepreneur as a distinguished educationist, administrator, philanthropist and public figure who dedicated much of his life to education, community development and humanitarian service.

Ibe was widely recognised for establishing Gregory University Uturu, a private institution created to expand access to higher education and promote practical learning, entrepreneurship and skills development.

Beyond the university, he was associated with Skill G Limited and Innov8 Hub, initiatives connected with technical development, innovation and entrepreneurship. Through these ventures, he supported efforts aimed at strengthening education, developing human capacity and creating opportunities for young Nigerians.

His death represents a loss to the academic community, particularly in Abia State, where his work in private higher education helped establish Gregory University as a prominent institution.

In politics, Ibe contested the 2023 Abia State governorship election under the platform of APGA. His campaign focused on development, improved public services, infrastructure and greater opportunities for residents across the state.

Although he did not emerge as governor, he remained a recognised figure in Abia’s political and educational circles.

His public profile also extended to philanthropy, with reports highlighting his support for students and educational initiatives intended to make higher education more accessible to young people.

The family said his life was defined by a commitment to service, generosity and the welfare of others. He was also remembered as a father, grandfather, brother and family patriarch.

Ibe is survived by six children and seven grandchildren. The family expressed appreciation to friends, associates and members of the public for their prayers and messages of sympathy following the announcement of his death.

Funeral arrangements had not been announced at the time of reporting. The family appealed for continued prayers and requested privacy as relatives mourn their loss.

Professor Gregory Ibe leaves behind an institutional legacy through Gregory University Uturu and his involvement in educational and entrepreneurial initiatives. His contributions to higher education, philanthropy and Abia State’s political life are expected to remain part of discussions about his public service and career.
