The Nigerian movie industry has been thrown into mourning following the reported death of veteran Nollywood actor, director and filmmaker Francis Duru at the age of 57.

Duru’s family announced his passing on Friday, October 23, 2026, through a statement shared on his verified Instagram account, saying the actor died following a brief illness.

The family expressed sadness over the loss and appealed for prayers, love and understanding as they come to terms with his death. The specific illness that led to his passing was not disclosed.

News of his death has sparked renewed attention to the career of an actor whose performances earned him recognition among Nigerian film audiences over several decades.

Duru became widely known for his role in the classic Nigerian movie Rattlesnake, directed by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe. His work in the film helped establish his place among the familiar faces of Nollywood’s early years.

Born on July 27, 1969, Duru studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt. Beyond acting, he was involved in directing and other aspects of filmmaking, contributing to the development of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

His career extended beyond the screen, as he also served in leadership within the Actors Guild of Nigeria. In 2010, he became the guild’s interim president, reflecting his involvement in the professional affairs of Nigerian actors.

Duru’s death has also drawn attention to the personal challenges he faced in recent years. In 2024, he suffered the loss of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, a deeply painful experience he spoke about publicly.

The actor had previously dismissed false reports about his health in June 2026, warning against the circulation of misleading information online. The latest announcement, however, was attributed to his family and was also reported by entertainment news outlets.

As news of his passing spreads, tributes are expected from colleagues, fans and members of the wider entertainment community who followed his work throughout his career.

His performances in Nigerian films, particularly his memorable appearance in Rattlesnake, remain part of his contribution to Nollywood’s history.

May his soul rest in peace, and may his family, friends and colleagues find strength and comfort during this difficult time.
