Mexico Grants Approval for Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s Ambassador After Months of Waiting

The Government of Mexico has formally approved Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the North American country, bringing an end to months of uncertainty surrounding his diplomatic posting.
Omokri announced the development on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, following the delivery of the diplomatic approval, known as agrément, by José Manuel Briseño Flores, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Mexico in Abuja.
The approval was conveyed to Ambassador Babagana Wakil, Director of Protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In his announcement, Omokri expressed gratitude over the development and confirmed that he had been accepted to represent Nigeria in Mexico. His diplomatic assignment also includes concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated Omokri for an ambassadorial position in November 2025 as part of a wider list of nominees submitted for diplomatic assignments abroad. The Senate subsequently confirmed the nominees in December of that year.
On March 6, 2026, Tinubu approved the deployment of 65 ambassadors and high commissioners to various countries and international missions, with Omokri assigned to Mexico City.
However, his posting remained pending while the Nigerian government awaited Mexico’s formal diplomatic consent. In August 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Mexico and Japan were among the countries yet to communicate final approval for certain Nigerian ambassadorial appointments.
The delay generated public discussion, with Omokri previously dismissing suggestions that Mexico had rejected his nomination. During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today in June, he maintained that the process was still ongoing.
The latest approval clears an important diplomatic requirement for his appointment. Under established diplomatic practice, a receiving country must grant agrément before a proposed ambassador can formally take up the position.
Omokri previously served as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan and later became known for his political commentary, public advocacy and commentary on Nigerian affairs.
Although Mexico’s approval represents a significant step in the process, the announcement did not specify when Omokri would formally assume duties or present his credentials to the Mexican president.
His appointment is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic representation in Mexico and support engagement with Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua under the concurrent accreditation arrangement.
