Navy, Army Intercept Illegal Petroleum Products, Arrest Three in Imo

Reported By Facthabournews

The Nigerian Navy, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, has intercepted vehicles carrying petroleum products suspected to have been illegally refined in Imo State, arresting three suspects during the operation.

The operation was conducted on August 21, 2026, along the Ejemekuru–Obudi-Agwa axis of Imo State by personnel of Naval Base Oguta working with Nigerian Army troops.

8,500 Litres of Suspected Illegal Products Intercepted

According to the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the security personnel intercepted two vehicles believed to be transporting illegally refined petroleum products.

The vehicles comprised a tipper truck and a Toyota Hiace bus. The authorities said the vehicles were carrying approximately 150 bags containing products suspected to have been illegally refined.

The combined volume of the intercepted products was estimated at about 8,500 litres.

Three suspects were arrested during the operation, while some occupants of the second vehicle reportedly fled from the scene, abandoning the vehicle and its contents.

The arrested suspects, vehicles and recovered products were subsequently taken into custody for further investigation.

Joint Operation Targets Illegal Oil Activities

The latest operation highlights continued cooperation between the Nigerian Navy and Nigerian Army in tackling crude oil theft, illegal refining and the unauthorised movement of petroleum products in the Niger Delta.

The Navy said the operation was based on intelligence and formed part of broader efforts to disrupt activities associated with illegal petroleum operations.

According to the Navy, intelligence-led operations allow security agencies to identify and disrupt suspected criminal activities before they can expand.

Captain Folorunsho said the operation demonstrated the importance of sustained cooperation between the military services in protecting Nigeria’s economic interests.

Illegal Refining Remains a Challenge

Illegal refining and crude oil theft have remained persistent challenges in Nigeria’s oil-producing region.

Security agencies have continued to conduct raids on suspected illegal refining locations, dismantling facilities and recovering petroleum products believed to have been obtained through unlawful activities.

In Rivers State, for example, recent Navy operations have uncovered several illegal refining sites and large quantities of suspected stolen crude oil. A separate operation in the Egboama/Ogbogolo area of Ahoada West Local Government Area resulted in the deactivation of four illegal refining sites and the recovery of an estimated 77,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil and related products.

The repeated discovery of such sites has kept crude oil theft and illegal refining among the major security and economic concerns in the Niger Delta.

Security Agencies Intensify Collaboration

The military has increasingly relied on joint operations, intelligence gathering and surveillance to tackle oil-related crimes across the region.

The Nigerian Navy has been conducting operations under its anti-crude oil theft initiatives, while the Army and other security agencies have also carried out raids against illegal refining networks.

Such operations are aimed at disrupting the infrastructure used for illegal refining, preventing the movement of stolen petroleum products and reducing activities that could undermine legitimate oil production and government revenue.

The latest arrests in Imo State demonstrate the role of joint operations in intercepting suspected illegal petroleum movements along transportation routes.

Investigation Underway

The three suspects remain in custody as the relevant authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the intercepted products.

The Navy has not announced a final determination on the source of the petroleum products or the specific roles allegedly played by the suspects.

The arrests therefore do not amount to a conviction, and the suspects are entitled to due process under Nigerian law.

Further action will depend on the outcome of the investigation and any evidence gathered by the authorities.

Economic Implications

Crude oil theft and illegal refining can have wider consequences for Nigeria’s economy because the country’s petroleum industry remains an important source of government revenue and foreign exchange.

Illegal activities can also create environmental risks, particularly where crude oil is spilled or refining activities are conducted without appropriate safety and environmental controls.

Government and security agencies have therefore continued to emphasise the need to protect oil-producing communities and critical petroleum infrastructure.

The authorities are also expected to continue working with relevant agencies and local communities to improve intelligence gathering and identify locations associated with illegal oil activities.

Navy Reaffirms Commitment

The Nigerian Navy said it would continue to work with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to combat crude oil theft, illegal refining and the illicit movement of petroleum products.

The latest operation in Imo adds to a series of interventions across the Niger Delta aimed at disrupting illegal oil-related activities.

For residents and legitimate businesses in the region, sustained enforcement could help create a safer environment for lawful economic activity, while improved monitoring may assist efforts to protect Nigeria’s petroleum resources.

As investigations into the latest interception continue, the three suspects, the recovered vehicles and the suspected illegal petroleum products remain in the custody of the authorities.

The operation underscores the continuing focus of Nigeria’s security agencies on protecting the country’s oil resources and disrupting networks involved in suspected petroleum-related economic crimes.
