GOMEP-NG Applauds Federal Government Over Nationwide Digital Switch-Over Rollout

The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) has welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to commence the nationwide implementation of the Digital Switch-Over (DSO) programme, describing the move as a significant step toward modernising Nigeria’s broadcasting sector.
In a statement jointly signed by its National President, Comrade Akpovoke Otiti, and National Secretary, Clinton Uba, the Guild praised the government’s renewed commitment to completing the transition from analogue to digital television broadcasting after years of delays.
According to GOMEP-NG, the announcement by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, that the nationwide rollout of the DSO programme will begin on June 17, 2026, while analogue television transmission will be fully phased out by December 31, 2028, demonstrates a renewed determination to align Nigeria’s broadcasting industry with global digital standards.
The Guild noted that the Digital Switch-Over programme has experienced several postponements and implementation setbacks since it was first introduced, delaying the country’s migration to digital broadcasting. It expressed optimism that the latest timeline would be faithfully implemented to ensure the successful completion of the project.
GOMEP-NG stated that full digital migration would improve broadcast quality, enhance spectrum efficiency, increase the number of television channels available to viewers, and create new opportunities for media organisations, content producers, technology providers, and investors.
The organisation also observed that the transition is expected to stimulate innovation within Nigeria’s creative and digital economy while expanding access to high-quality broadcasting services across the country.
While commending the Federal Government for reviving the programme, the Guild urged relevant agencies to intensify public awareness campaigns to ensure that citizens understand the benefits of digital broadcasting and the steps required to prepare for the transition.
It further called on stakeholders, including broadcasters, manufacturers, regulators, and telecommunications operators, to work together to ensure a seamless implementation of the Digital Switch-Over programme.
The Digital Switch-Over is a globally recognised initiative aimed at replacing analogue television broadcasting with digital transmission, offering improved picture and sound quality, more efficient use of radio spectrum, and expanded broadcasting services.
GOMEP-NG expressed confidence that successful implementation of the programme would strengthen Nigeria’s media industry, promote technological advancement, and position the country to fully benefit from emerging opportunities in the digital broadcasting ecosystem.
