President Tinubu to Address Nigerians on 66th Independence Anniversary

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will address Nigerians on Thursday, October 1, 2026, as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.

According to a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the President’s nationwide broadcast is scheduled for 7 a.m. on Thursday.

The address is expected to form part of activities marking Nigeria’s independence from British colonial rule in 1960.

The Presidency has advised television and radio stations, as well as other electronic media organisations, to join the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) for the broadcast.

The announcement was contained in a State House press release dated September 30, 2026.

The President’s Independence Day address will provide an opportunity for the Federal Government to communicate with citizens on issues of national importance as the country enters another year of self-government.

Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, making the 2026 celebration the 66th anniversary of the country’s independence.

The national broadcast is one of the major traditional features of Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations, during which the President addresses citizens and reflects on the country’s progress, challenges and future direction.

The Presidency has not disclosed the specific issues President Tinubu will address in Thursday’s broadcast.

Television and radio stations intending to carry the address have been directed to connect to the NTA and FRCN network services at the scheduled time.
