BREAKING: Veteran Nollywood Actor Olu Jacobs Dies at 84

Reported By Facthabournews

Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.

His death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in an Instagram post on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

In the announcement, the family expressed gratitude for the life of the veteran actor and described him as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The family also appealed to the public to respect its privacy at this difficult time.

Olu Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most recognisable actors, with a career spanning several decades across theatre, television and film. He became a major figure in the Nigerian film industry and was widely regarded as one of the veteran actors who helped shape the development of Nollywood.

Before establishing himself as a major figure in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, Jacobs trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He also appeared in a number of British television productions and international films before returning to Nigeria and building an extensive career in the country’s theatre and film industries.

His body of work included numerous Nigerian movies as well as international productions. He also co-founded the Lufodo Group with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, contributing to the development of professional theatre and film production in Nigeria. The Lufodo Group describes Jacobs as an actor, writer, stage director and producer whose career spanned about five decades.

Jacobs was also recognised nationally for his contribution to the arts. He was conferred with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR), while his career earned him several awards and honours, including lifetime achievement recognition.

His death comes just two months after he celebrated his 84th birthday on July 11, 2026. At the time, his wife, Joke Silva, publicly celebrated him and expressed gratitude for his life.

The veteran actor had in previous years been the subject of several false death rumours, which were repeatedly dismissed by his family and associates. His death was, however, formally announced by his family on Wednesday.

News of his passing has triggered tributes from colleagues, fans and members of the Nigerian entertainment industry, many of whom have been celebrating his long contribution to Nigerian theatre, television and cinema.

Olu Jacobs’ passing marks the loss of one of the most prominent figures of Nigeria’s acting tradition. His performances, stage work and contributions to the development of the country’s film industry have left a lasting mark on generations of Nigerian audiences.

As the entertainment industry mourns, details concerning funeral arrangements are expected to be communicated by the family.

The family has meanwhile appealed to the public and the media to respect its privacy as it mourns the veteran actor and celebrates his life and legacy.
