Rivers Funeral Turns Tragic as RCCG Pastor Dies While Preaching About Death

A funeral ceremony in Aleto, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, has ended in shock and mourning after a pastor reportedly collapsed and died while delivering a sermon about the certainty of death.
The cleric was identified as Deacon Steve Eyo, the Resident Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Aleto.
According to reports from the event, Eyo was officiating at a burial ceremony on Friday, October 2, when he mounted the podium to address more than 300 mourners and other attendees.
His sermon was titled “The Certainty of Death and Hope Beyond.”
Eyewitness accounts cited by several news organisations said the pastor spoke about the inevitability of death and encouraged those present to recognise that nobody knows when life will end.
In explaining his message, Eyo reportedly compared human life to a visit to the market. He was said to have explained that just as some people leave a market early while others remain until later, people also leave the world at different times.
The pastor reportedly warned that death could come unexpectedly and urged the mourners to live with an awareness of their mortality.
However, about 15 minutes after he began his sermon, the situation reportedly changed suddenly when Eyo collapsed.
The microphone fell to the ground as he went down, leaving those at the ceremony momentarily confused. Some attendees reportedly initially thought the fall was part of the pastor’s illustration about the suddenness of death because of the subject of his message.
It soon became apparent that the situation was a medical emergency.
Church ministers, choir members and other people at the ceremony reportedly gathered around the pastor and attempted to assist him. Prayers were offered while people with medical knowledge at the venue reportedly administered first aid.
When his condition did not improve, Eyo was rushed to a nearby hospital.
Reports said an ambulance that had been hired to transport the remains of the person whose burial was taking place was used to convey the pastor to the medical facility.
He was subsequently confirmed dead at the hospital, after which his remains were reportedly taken to a mortuary.
The incident has left members of the RCCG community and residents of Aleto mourning, particularly because of the subject of the pastor’s final sermon.
One eyewitness account said Eyo had reminded those present to prepare for the possibility that death could come at any time. Some reports also quoted him as telling the mourners to “number your days and prepare, for it can happen anytime.”
The circumstances surrounding his sudden death remain unclear. Reports reviewed did not disclose a confirmed medical cause, and there is no verified basis to attribute his death to any particular illness or condition.
What was expected to be a solemn farewell for one member of the community consequently became another moment of grief, as mourners were confronted with the sudden loss of the minister who had been addressing them about mortality.
The incident has also drawn attention because of the striking coincidence between the theme of Eyo’s sermon and the events that followed, although the circumstances should not be interpreted beyond the facts established by available reports.
The Aleto community and members of the church are now mourning the death of the cleric, while details concerning his family, funeral arrangements and any official statement from the church were not immediately available in the reports reviewed.
