Kano Police Move Five to Court Over Alleged Political Poster Vandalism

Five persons have been taken to court in Kano following their arrest over alleged damage to political billboards and posters carrying the images of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and other political figures.
The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, disclosed the development while responding to questions from journalists on recent security measures in the state.
According to the police commissioner, the suspects were picked up after investigations into the alleged destruction of political materials during a period of heightened security concerns surrounding public processions and horse-riding activities in Kano.
Bakori said the investigation had been completed and the five suspects had subsequently been charged before a court.
The case comes amid renewed tension around public activities in Kano, particularly following the recent outing involving Aminu Ado Bayero, one of the claimants in the state’s long-running emirate dispute.
Police said reports received after the outing indicated that some members of the crowd allegedly accompanying the emir were involved in damaging political posters and billboards displaying the images of Tinubu, Governor Yusuf and other politicians.
The police have not indicated that the five suspects are guilty of the alleged offences. Their decision to prosecute means the allegations will now be subject to judicial consideration.
The development has also drawn attention to the wider security situation in Kano, where authorities have continued to enforce restrictions on certain public processions and horse-riding activities.
Bakori reiterated that persons or groups intending to organise public horse-riding events or processions are expected to obtain approval from the police in advance. He said organisers are required to give adequate notice to enable security agencies to assess possible risks and make necessary arrangements.
The commissioner also warned residents against actions, statements or gatherings capable of escalating tensions or disturbing public order.
The police command said its approach was intended to prevent incidents capable of threatening lives, property and peaceful coexistence in the state.
The arrests have occurred at a politically sensitive period, with attention already turning toward the 2027 general elections. However, the police case against the five suspects is centred on the alleged destruction of political materials and related public-order concerns.
For now, the suspects remain defendants in the case, and any determination of their criminal responsibility will rest with the court.
