Arsenal suffered their first defeat of the 2026/27 Premier League season after Brighton & Hove Albion stunned the reigning champions with a convincing 3–0 victory at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.
The Gunners had entered the match with a perfect record after winning their opening four league games, but Brighton produced an impressive performance to bring Arsenal’s winning run to an end just before the international break.
Pascal Groß opened the scoring for Brighton in the 31st minute with a strike from the edge of the penalty area, giving the home side a deserved lead.
Brighton continued to cause problems for Arsenal and doubled their advantage shortly before half-time. Charalampos Kostoulas produced an excellent finish from distance to put the Seagulls 2–0 ahead going into the interval.
Arsenal returned for the second half looking for a way back into the contest, but Brighton remained in control.
The home side extended their advantage in the 57th minute when Chema Andrés found the net with a powerful header, making it 3–0 and putting the result beyond Arsenal’s reach.
The defeat represents Arsenal’s first league loss of the campaign after four consecutive victories. It also ended their perfect start to the Premier League season and saw the Gunners surrender the opportunity to maintain their 100 per cent record.
Brighton’s victory was particularly significant as it came on the club’s 125th anniversary and strengthened their position near the top of the early Premier League standings.
For Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, the result provides a setback after an impressive opening to the campaign. The Gunners had also recorded victories over Aston Villa, Chelsea and Sunderland in the league, alongside their other successes in domestic and European competition.
Brighton, meanwhile, produced one of their strongest performances of the campaign. Their attacking pressure and ability to exploit spaces in the Arsenal defence allowed them to score three goals without conceding.
The result also gives Brighton an important boost going into the international break, while Arsenal will have time to assess the performance and prepare for their return to competitive action.
The Gunners will now have to regroup during the international break before beginning their next phase of the season.
For Brighton, however, the afternoon will be remembered as a memorable anniversary celebration and a statement victory over the reigning Premier League champions.
We go again after the international break.
