Yari Predicts APC Will Retain Power Beyond 2031

Reported By John Williams

Former Zamfara State Governor and Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Organisation, Senator Abdul’Aziz Yari, has expressed confidence that the ruling party will remain in power beyond 2031.

Yari made the declaration while speaking about the APC’s preparations for the 2027 general election and the prospects of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu securing another term in office.

According to the former governor, the APC’s continued political dominance would depend on the party’s ability to deliver on its promises, communicate its achievements and maintain unity among its members.

Yari Expresses Confidence in APC’s Future

Yari, who is playing a prominent role in the APC’s 2027 campaign structure, said the party was preparing for a long-term political presence in Nigeria.

His comments come shortly after the APC constituted its 2027 Presidential Campaign Council, with Yari appointed Director-General and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma named Secretary.

The campaign structure places senior party officials, governors, legislators and political strategists in various positions as the ruling party begins more organised preparations for the next presidential election.

Yari’s latest statement suggests that the APC’s ambitions extend beyond simply retaining the presidency in 2027.

2027 Election at the Centre of APC Strategy

The 2027 presidential election is expected to be a major political contest, with President Tinubu seeking another term and opposition parties working to develop strategies to challenge the ruling party.

Yari said the APC would continue to mobilise Nigerians around the policies and programmes of the Tinubu administration.

The campaign leadership is expected to focus on presenting the administration’s record to voters, particularly in areas such as economic reforms, infrastructure, security, social investment and other government programmes.

The party is also expected to intensify grassroots mobilisation across the country’s six geopolitical zones as the election approaches.

Campaign Council Begins Preparations

The APC’s decision to appoint Yari as campaign Director-General gives the former governor responsibility for coordinating major aspects of the party’s presidential campaign.

Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is also Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, was appointed Secretary.

President Tinubu will chair the campaign council, while Vice President Kashim Shettima and APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda will serve as Vice Chairmen.

The structure also includes Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, governors, senators and other senior party figures.

The appointments indicate the importance the APC is placing on coordination between the presidency, the party leadership and its elected officials.

APC Faces Opposition Challenge

Despite Yari’s confidence, the APC is expected to face strong competition in the 2027 election.

Several opposition politicians and political groups have been exploring alliances aimed at challenging the ruling party.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and other opposition figures remain prominent players in discussions surrounding the next presidential election, while various political coalitions are also seeking to build a broader platform.

The APC will therefore need to convince voters that the Tinubu administration’s policies have produced sufficient benefits to justify another term.

Economic Record Likely to Feature in Campaign

The government’s economic reforms are expected to be one of the major issues in the campaign.

The Tinubu administration has defended reforms including the removal of petrol subsidy and changes to the foreign exchange system, arguing that they were necessary to stabilise public finances and create conditions for long-term economic growth.

However, the reforms have also generated concerns over the cost of living, fuel prices, inflation and the financial pressures facing households and businesses.

The APC’s campaign will therefore have to balance its presentation of economic reforms with the concerns of Nigerians experiencing the effects of higher living costs.

Beyond 2031

Yari’s prediction that the APC could remain in power beyond 2031 represents a broader political ambition for the ruling party.

Political parties seeking long-term relevance typically depend on their ability to maintain internal cohesion, build effective grassroots structures and retain public support.

For the APC, maintaining its position beyond 2031 would require more than winning the next presidential election. It would also depend on the party’s ability to develop new political leaders, manage internal disagreements and respond to changing voter expectations.

The party has experienced internal disputes at different levels since its formation, making unity a key factor in its long-term political strategy.

Voters Will Have the Final Say

While Yari has expressed confidence in the APC’s future, elections ultimately determine which political party controls government.

The 2027 election will provide the immediate test of the ruling party’s popularity and organisational strength.

Voters will assess the performance of the current administration alongside the alternative programmes presented by opposition candidates and political parties.

For now, Yari’s declaration reflects the confidence of the APC campaign leadership as preparations for the 2027 presidential contest gather momentum.

Whether the party can secure another mandate under Tinubu and extend its political dominance beyond 2031 will depend on the campaign, the performance of the administration and, ultimately, the decision of Nigerian voters at the polls.
