Akwa Ibom Aviation Expansion: Governor Umo Eno Welcomes New Airbus A220-300 to Boost Ibom Air Fleet to 10

UYO, NIGERIA — Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has described the acquisition of a brand-new Airbus A220-300 aircraft for Ibom Air as a defining milestone in the state’s aviation strategy, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to continuous investment and regional economic expansion.
The governor made the remarks following his return from Mirabel, Quebec, Canada, where he led a state delegation to the Airbus manufacturing facility for the official pre-delivery inspection. The new jet is scheduled to land at Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo before the end of August 2026, officially expanding Ibom Air’s total operational fleet to 10 aircraft.
Strategic Fleet Growth and Economic Intent
Addressing journalists upon his return, Governor Eno highlighted that the latest acquisition serves as concrete evidence of consistency in government policy. Since assuming office in May 2023, his administration has facilitated the acquisition of three Airbus A220-300 jets and fully paid for two additional aircraft, bringing the total number of procurements under his tenure to five.
“This is not just about bringing in aircraft; it is about building a sustainable economic ecosystem,” Governor Eno stated. He explained that the goal extends beyond expanding flight schedules to stimulating crucial economic sectors across Akwa Ibom State, including job creation, tourism, logistics, hospitality, and commerce. Improved air travel infrastructure is expected to bolster the “Destination Akwa Ibom” initiative, making the state more accessible to foreign investors and trade partners.
Developing the Aviation Ecosystem
Designed for optimal short- and medium-haul routes, the Airbus A220-300 delivers enhanced fuel efficiency, modern cabin comfort, and operational flexibility needed for domestic and regional route expansion. The added capacity will allow Ibom Air to meet growing passenger demand ahead of peak travel seasons while optimizing scheduling across its network.
The fleet expansion is closely linked to ongoing infrastructure projects around Victor Attah International Airport:
- Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) Facility: The near-complete state MRO facility will allow heavy aircraft maintenance checks to be conducted locally, conserving foreign exchange and establishing Uyo as a regional technical hub.
- Aviation Village: Ongoing development designed to provide housing, administrative support, and operational facilities for aviation personnel and auxiliary businesses.
Call for Peace and Shared Prosperity
Alongside aviation developments, Governor Eno used the platform to advocate for political stability and social cohesion. He urged citizens to reject divisive political or ethnic rhetoric, warning that internal division hinders long-term development. Reaffirming his commitment to the “Akwa Ibom United” philosophy, the governor assured residents that state resources and infrastructure projects will continue to be distributed equitably across all 31 local government areas.
