Akpabio Hails Tinubu, Eno as Federal Varsity Takes Off in Akwa Ibom

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture and Technology, Obio Akpa, in Oruk Anam Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Akpabio also praised Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for making the Obio Akpa campus of the Akwa Ibom State University available to facilitate the immediate commencement of academic activities at the new federal institution.

The Senate President made the remarks during a funeral service held in honour of the late former Majority Leader of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon. Imo Akpan Ibokette, in Abak Local Government Area of the state.

Akpabio Commends Tinubu

Akpabio expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for signing the legislation establishing the Federal University of Agriculture and Technology in Obio Akpa.

He described the development as an important step towards expanding access to tertiary education and strengthening opportunities for young people in the state.

The Senate President said he was particularly looking forward to the admission of the institution’s pioneer students.

According to him, the establishment of the university would provide another opportunity for young people in Akwa Ibom and neighbouring communities to acquire specialised education in agriculture, technology and related fields.

“I look forward to the admission of the first batch of students into the Federal University of Agriculture and Technology in this Senatorial District,” Akpabio said.

The institution is expected to focus on areas connected to agriculture, technology, research and human-capital development.

Eno Provides Campus for Take-Off

Akpabio also acknowledged Governor Umo Eno’s role in facilitating the immediate take-off of the federal university.

The governor made available the Obio Akpa campus of Akwa Ibom State University for the commencement of activities by the new federal institution.

The arrangement is expected to allow the university to begin operations while longer-term infrastructure and institutional arrangements are developed.

Akpabio specifically thanked Governor Eno for releasing the campus for the commencement of academic activities.

“Let me also thank our dear Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for releasing a campus of the Akwa Ibom State University for the commencement of academic activities this year,” he said.

The collaboration between the Federal Government and the state government is expected to provide the new university with a foundation from which it can develop its academic and administrative structures.

University Expected to Commence Activities This Year

According to Akpabio, the Federal University of Agriculture and Technology, Obio Akpa, is expected to commence academic activities this year.

The Senate President’s comments suggest that preparations are already being made for the admission of pioneer students.

The start of the institution is expected to create additional opportunities for students seeking admission into tertiary institutions, particularly those interested in agriculture, science and technology-related disciplines.

Beyond admissions, the university could also contribute to research, innovation and skills development in Akwa Ibom.

Focus on Agriculture and Technology

The establishment of the university comes at a time when Nigeria continues to emphasise the importance of agriculture, technology and human-capital development in strengthening the national economy.

A university with a specific focus on agriculture and technology could provide opportunities for research into modern farming methods, food production, agricultural processing, environmental management and technology-driven solutions.

It could also help produce graduates with skills relevant to agriculture-related businesses, technology companies and other emerging sectors.

For Akwa Ibom, the institution could complement existing tertiary institutions and broaden the state’s educational landscape.

A New Opportunity for Obio Akpa and Surrounding Communities

The location of the institution in Obio Akpa is also expected to generate economic activity within the host community and surrounding areas.

The arrival of students, academic staff, administrative personnel and other workers can create demand for accommodation, transportation, food services, retail businesses and other support services.

As the university expands, opportunities could also emerge for local businesses and professionals to provide services to the institution and its community.

However, the long-term impact will depend on the development of adequate infrastructure, effective management and sustained investment in academic programmes and research facilities.

Akpabio Remembers Late Ibokette

Akpabio’s comments on the university were made during a ceremony marking the burial of Imo Akpan Ibokette, a former Majority Leader of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.

The Senate President described the late lawmaker as a patriot and selfless leader who contributed to the development of his community and the state.

Akpabio recalled that Ibokette was among the first people to contact him after hearing about the passage of the legislation establishing the university.

He described the late former legislator’s death as a personal loss, noting that their relationship had continued across political differences.

According to Akpabio, Ibokette lived long enough to witness some of the transformation for which he had worked during his lifetime.

Education and Human Capital Development

The establishment of the new university adds another federal higher education institution to Akwa Ibom’s growing educational infrastructure.

The state already hosts universities, polytechnics and other tertiary institutions serving students from different parts of Nigeria.

The new federal university is expected to complement these institutions while providing specialised programmes centred on agriculture and technology.

For prospective students, the immediate priority will be the announcement of approved programmes, admission requirements, academic calendar and other details by the university’s management and relevant regulatory authorities.

Potential Economic Impact

Apart from its educational mandate, the university could become an important economic institution within the state.

Universities can stimulate local economies through employment, procurement, accommodation, transportation and demand for various services.

Research partnerships can also connect universities with government agencies, private companies, farmers and other organisations.

For an institution focused on agriculture and technology, such partnerships could be particularly relevant to the development of agricultural enterprises and technology-based solutions.

The university could therefore become part of the broader effort to develop skilled manpower and support economic diversification.

A Federal-State Collaboration

The immediate take-off of the institution demonstrates the potential value of cooperation between the Federal Government and Akwa Ibom State Government.

President Tinubu’s approval and signing of the legislation provides the federal legal foundation for the university, while Governor Eno’s decision to make an existing campus available provides an immediate physical base for academic activities.

Akpabio’s commendation of both leaders reflects the political and administrative cooperation surrounding the institution’s establishment.

The next phase will be to ensure that the university develops the facilities, academic programmes, staffing and administrative systems required to provide quality education.

What to Expect

With the institution expected to commence academic activities this year, prospective students and other stakeholders will be watching for official announcements concerning admissions and programmes.

The university’s development could also attract new investments and services to Obio Akpa and surrounding communities.

For Akwa Ibom, the establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture and Technology represents an opportunity to further strengthen education and skills development while creating a new centre for agricultural and technological research.

The success of the institution will ultimately depend on sustained funding, effective leadership, quality teaching, research capacity and adequate infrastructure.

For now, however, the approval of the university and the availability of the Obio Akpa campus have cleared an important stage towards its take-off.

Akpabio’s message is clear: he sees the new institution as an important development for the senatorial district, while acknowledging President Tinubu for establishing the university and Governor Eno for helping provide the facilities needed for its immediate commencement.

This report is based on statements attributed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and publicly reported information concerning the Federal University of Agriculture and Technology, Obio Akpa. Admission dates, programmes and other operational details should be confirmed through official announcements from the university and relevant regulatory authorities.
