Pastor Found Dead in Akwa Ibom as Police Launch Investigation into Circumstances Surrounding Incident

UYO – The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has commenced a comprehensive investigation into the death of the Founder and General Overseer of Power in the Word of God for the World Ministries, Oron, Pastor Etetim Udo, who was found dead under circumstances currently being investigated by security authorities.

The tragic incident, which has sent shockwaves through the Christian community and residents of Oron Local Government Area, was reported to the police on Thursday, July 23, 2026, prompting an immediate response from detectives attached to the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the police received a distress call at about 8:18 a.m. from a concerned resident who regularly parks his motorcycle within the church premises.

The resident informed the police that upon arriving at the church that morning, he noticed an unusual gathering of people, raising concerns that something was wrong. He later approached the scene and was reportedly informed by the deceased’s children that their father had allegedly taken his own life.

Following the report, police operatives immediately mobilised to the church premises to secure the area and commence preliminary investigations into the incident.

The Command disclosed that officers who arrived at the scene found the deceased suspended with what was described as a twisted mosquito-net rope. Investigators immediately documented the scene and began collecting relevant evidence to assist in determining the exact circumstances surrounding the pastor’s death.

The body was later evacuated by police officers and deposited in a mortuary, where it will be preserved pending further examination and any other procedures considered necessary by investigators.

Police authorities stressed that investigations are still at an early stage and urged members of the public to avoid speculation or spreading unverified information capable of misleading the public or causing unnecessary anxiety.

The Command assured residents that detectives are conducting a thorough and professional investigation, including interviews with family members, church associates and other relevant persons, to establish all the facts surrounding the incident.

The death of Pastor Etetim Udo has generated widespread reactions across Akwa Ibom State, with church members, religious leaders and residents expressing grief over the loss of the cleric. Many have taken to social media to pay tribute to him and offer condolences to his family and members of his congregation.

While the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, the police reiterated their commitment to carrying out a transparent and impartial inquiry. They assured the public that the outcome of the investigation would be made known once all necessary procedures have been concluded.

As of the time of filing this report, no official conclusion has been reached regarding the cause of Pastor Udo’s death, and the Akwa Ibom State Police Command says investigations remain ongoing.
