Over 61,000 Fans Sign Petition Seeking Replay of Argentina-Spain 2026 World Cup Final

A petition calling for the replay of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain has attracted more than 61,000 signatures, with supporters alleging that controversial refereeing decisions influenced the outcome of the championship match.
The online campaign, hosted on Change.org, was launched by Argentine football supporter Gisela Sánchez following Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final played on July 19 in New York.
The petition questions several decisions made by Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić, with supporters arguing that key officiating calls affected the result of the match, which saw Spain lift their second FIFA World Cup trophy.
Organisers of the campaign have urged FIFA to review the final and order a replay, claiming that certain incidents during the game deserve further scrutiny. However, the petition does not provide independently verified evidence to support allegations of wrongdoing or procedural violations.
The campaign has continued to gain momentum online, surpassing 61,500 signatures within days of its launch, reflecting the disappointment among many Argentine supporters following their narrow defeat in the final.
Despite the growing number of signatures, sports governing experts note that petitions hosted on platforms such as Change.org have no legal authority over FIFA’s decisions and cannot compel football’s world governing body to alter the outcome of an officially concluded match.

The Argentine petition follows a similar online campaign launched by French supporters after Spain defeated France in the tournament’s semi-final. That petition reportedly attracted more than 82,000 signatures from fans who questioned the officiating of the match and called for it to be replayed.
Like the French campaign, however, the Argentine initiative has not prompted any action from FIFA, which has maintained the official tournament results.
