Shehu Sani Rejects Claims on Abacha’s Death, Says Account Lacks Credible Evidence

By Facthabournews

Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has dismissed recent claims regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of former Nigerian military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, describing the account as speculative and unsupported by credible evidence.

Sani’s reaction followed the publication of a memoir by retired Department of State Services (DSS) officer, Dennis Amachree, titled “DSS @40: My Journey Behind the Shield,” in which the former intelligence officer gave his version of the events leading to Abacha’s death on June 8, 1998.

In the book, Amachree claimed that the late military ruler suffered a fatal cardiac arrest during a private encounter at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. According to the retired DSS official, the incident allegedly occurred in the early hours of the morning before medical personnel were summoned, but efforts to save the former Head of State proved unsuccessful.

The publication has reignited public debate over one of Nigeria’s most controversial political events, with many Nigerians revisiting the various accounts that have circulated over the years concerning the former military leader’s sudden death.

Reacting to the publication, Shehu Sani questioned the credibility of the narrative, arguing that the author failed to provide convincing evidence to support the claims.

In a statement shared through his official social media platform, the former lawmaker urged Nigerians to treat the account with caution.

“The claim on circumstances surrounding Abacha’s death is misleading. The author couldn’t provide any convincing evidence other than literary narrative. It should be ignored,” Sani stated.

According to him, extraordinary historical claims require verifiable evidence and should not be accepted solely on the basis of personal recollections or uncorroborated accounts.

General Sani Abacha served as Nigeria’s Head of State from November 1993 until his death in June 1998. His administration remains one of the most debated periods in Nigeria’s political history, attracting differing opinions over its achievements, human rights record and governance style.

Since his death, numerous accounts have emerged regarding the circumstances surrounding his final moments, with different authors, former government officials and political actors offering varying versions of events. However, many of those accounts have remained difficult to independently verify, contributing to years of public speculation.

The release of Amachree’s memoir has once again drawn attention to those longstanding debates, with historians and political observers noting that the publication is likely to generate renewed discussions about one of the country’s most significant political transitions.

Neither members of the late General Abacha’s family nor the Federal Government had publicly responded to the specific claims contained in the memoir at the time of this report.

As public interest in the publication continues to grow, Shehu Sani’s remarks underscore the need for caution when evaluating historical narratives, particularly those based largely on personal recollections. His intervention reflects the broader view that historical claims should be supported by documentary records, corroborating evidence or verifiable facts before they are accepted as an accurate account of events.
