Oriire Schoolchildren Rescue: How Arrests of Kidnappers’ Relatives Helped Security Forces Free Victims

The successful rescue of pupils and teachers abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State followed weeks of intelligence gathering, coordinated security operations, and the arrest of individuals linked to the kidnappers, including some of their relatives and associates, security officials have disclosed.
The victims, who were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, regained their freedom on July 10 after spending 56 days in captivity. Their rescue was carried out through a multi-agency operation involving the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Navy, the Office of the National Security Adviser, Amotekun Corps, local vigilantes, hunters, and other security agencies.
According to military authorities, the operation was driven by intelligence gathered over several weeks. Investigators reportedly dismantled parts of the kidnappers’ support network by arresting individuals suspected of providing logistics, communication, and other forms of assistance. The arrests, including those of some family members and close associates of the kidnappers, reportedly yielded valuable information that helped security forces identify the terrorists’ movements and locations.
Armed with the intelligence, security operatives intensified surveillance around the Old Oyo National Park and surrounding areas, where the victims were believed to have been held. The final rescue mission resulted in the safe recovery of the abducted pupils and teachers, while several suspected kidnappers were arrested and others were killed during the operation, according to official statements.
President Bola Tinubu and the Oyo State Government commended the security agencies for the operation, describing it as a major success in the fight against kidnapping. Authorities also said no ransom or concession was made to secure the victims’ release.
The rescue has been welcomed by families, community leaders, and education stakeholders, many of whom have called for stronger security measures around schools to prevent future attacks. Investigations into the kidnapping and the activities of the suspected criminal network are continuing, while the rescued pupils and teachers are expected to receive medical attention and psychosocial support following their ordeal.
