Court Asked to Stop APC Disciplinary Panel from Sanctioning Akwa Ibom Assembly Aspirants

Eight aggrieved aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State have approached the Federal High Court, Uyo, seeking an interlocutory injunction to prevent the party from taking disciplinary action against them while their substantive suit remains pending before the court.
The application was filed in Suit No. FHC/UY/CS/104/2026 by Asuquo Ndiana Okon, Uko Asian Johnson, Kennedy Matthew Akpan, Effiong Victor Bassey, Nsunwara Blessing Okon, Noah Samuel Okon, Nyoho Samson Jackson, and Dr. Godwin Udo Umontuen.
The respondents named in the suit include the All Progressives Congress (APC), the APC Akwa Ibom State Screening/Appeal Committee, other relevant party officials, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In their motion, the applicants urged the court to issue an order restraining the first to third respondents, their officers, agents, representatives, disciplinary committees, or any other persons acting on their behalf from suspending, expelling, or imposing disciplinary sanctions on them pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.
According to the applicants, granting the interim relief is necessary to preserve the subject matter of the litigation and prevent actions that could render the court proceedings ineffective before a final decision is reached.
The dispute is connected to events arising from the APC’s internal processes ahead of the 2027 elections in Akwa Ibom State. The applicants are challenging certain actions taken by the party and are asking the court to determine issues relating to their rights and the procedures adopted during the process.
As of the time of filing this report, the Federal High Court had not delivered a ruling on the application for an interlocutory injunction. The respondents are expected to present their responses in accordance with the court’s directives.
The case is one of several pre-election disputes currently before Nigerian courts as political parties continue preparations for the 2027 general elections.
