Senate Prioritises State Police Bill as Lawmakers Resume Plenary

The Senate has announced that the proposed establishment of state police will be its top legislative priority when lawmakers resume plenary on Tuesday.

Senate spokesperson, , disclosed that the constitutional amendment bill seeking the creation of state police has already been transmitted to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for consideration and concurrence.

According to him, the National Assembly is optimistic that the amendment process will be concluded during the tenure of the 10th National Assembly.

Adaramodu said the Senate remains committed to advancing the bill as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and respond to growing calls for reforms in policing.

He noted that the proposed state police system has generated significant public interest, with many stakeholders advocating for a decentralised policing structure to address security challenges more effectively across the country.

The establishment of state police has been a subject of national debate for several years, with supporters arguing that it could improve community-based policing and enhance the ability of states to respond to local security concerns. Others have called for adequate constitutional safeguards to ensure accountability and prevent potential misuse.

The Senate is expected to continue deliberations on the constitutional amendment alongside other key legislative matters as plenary activities resume.
